Blackheath Morris was founded by an unholy conclave of anarchists, arts students and construction workers some time in the late 1960s (memory of the precise year, like much from that time, remains hazy). While their dancing was noted for its energy and enthusiasm rather than technical proficiency, they also set the record for being barred from more pubs in South London than any other folk-dance group, although the famous Brockley Bavarian Bumklapsers were close runners up.
Proud members have come and gone over the years, and former Blackheathens who have sadly departed this realm occasionally return to bless the dance-outs with spectral heckling and mysterious beery miasmas.
The team has performed at a wide variety of venues and events over the years, from folk festivals across Europe to rock festivals with Hawkwind; from the main stadium at the closing of the London 2012 Olympics to Avant Garde performance art pieces in Mile End. We have entertained politicians, students, wedding parties, corporate gatherings and passengers waiting at the 175 bus stop.
